Consider for patients with leukocytes and/or lactoferrin in the stool.Patients with risk factors for severe illness.Severe gastroenteritis or persistent diarrhea.Testing for leukocytes and/or lactoferrin in the stool in patients with suspected infectious gastroenteritis is controversial and 2017 IDSA guidelines recommend against these studies in patients with acute infectious diarrhea. Stool analysis : (for inflammatory markers ): may show leukocytes, occult blood, and/or lactoferrin.Eosinophilia: may indicate a parasitic infection caused by invasive helminths.
